This snarling, sensual group of gals from the Great White North bring new meaning to the adage "The men don't know, but the little girls understand." Belying the fact that they're barely out of their teens, Morgan Lander and company showcase both a keen musicianship and a startling sense of dynamic on this sophomore outing. Yes, they're capable of spewing out tunes as corrosively ugly as any of their male competition -- as they prove on the demonically intense "Mouthful of Poison" -- but Kittie knows more than one way to skin a tune. Lander can issue {|Corgan|}-esque pleas for understanding (like the soaring "In Winter"), meld sweetness and brutality (as on "What I Always Wanted"), or paint in shades of psychedelia (as on the wonderfully dizzy "Pink Lemonade"). There's plenty of aggression on Oracle, particularly in the furious drumming of Mercedes Lander, but rather than merely spattering their songs with random noise-bursts, the band layers their fuzzy, gradually escalating guitar riffs with clear-eyed precision. Oracle guarantees at least nine lives for these three thrash-rock femmes fatales.

Oracle - Kittie

A refreshing alternative to the testosterone posturing of the Family Values crowd, Kittie are poised to overthrow rap-metal's patriarchy and piss-mark the throne for themselves. This walloping all-girl quartet from London, Ontario, is more {|Ozzy|} than {|Alanis|}, kicking out downtuned, wall-of-sound guitar riffs and mostly indecipherable wailing with a ferociousness that belies their teen years. Clocking in at under 40 minutes, SPIT thrashes at the speed of puberty; the band rages through goth-metal-tinged, bass-heavy songs, as frontwomen Fallon Bowman and Morgan Lander howl like felines guarding their territory. The speed-metal crush of "Brackish" sounds like {|Luscious Jackson|} methed-up in a dark, damp basement. On "Do You Think I'm a Whore?," the singer's self-flagellation ("I look into the mirror/The whore is all I see") is betrayed by aggressive whomping riffs -- this is not the music of girls who feel sorry for themselves because they're members of the second sex. In fact, Kittie could be leaders for the Total Request Live generation's feminist uprising -- that is, if anyone could figure out what they're singing. A few songs into the album, though, and it doesn't really matter. Kittie seizes command of an overwhelmingly male genre without resorting to T&A antics, and that's a feminist statement in itself.

Spit - Kittie

A Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay

Like the best rock bands, Coldplay revels in drama. But unlike most platinum-selling acts, their appeal is cerebral rather than visceral -- at times, the band's music seems more suited to cathedrals than rock clubs, thanks in part to Chris Martin's ethereal voice and the sweeping lines that emanate from Jonny Buckland's guitar. Oddly, the portent never seems to weigh down Coldplay's melodies, which sent their hits "Yellow" and "Trouble" (from the multi-platinum previous album, {|Parachutes|}) soaring. On their follow-up, A Rush of Blood to the Head, the quartet largely pick up where they left off, although the disc does have its share of sonic deviations -- notably the opener, "Politik," which seethes more than it soothes, trailing angry guitar wails and palpable anger on Martin's part. "A Whisper" traverses different terrain -- Floyd-ian space-pop -- at similarly high speed, its beats swirling like comets across a vast dub-wise universe. Fans drawn to the intimate tone of "Yellow," however, still have plenty of chances to luxuriate: "The Scientist," which is carried by a deceptively simple piano line, beckons ever so softly; the lovelorn "Warning Sign" has a comparably lilting, heartstring-tugging theme. Coldplay may wear a pretty face, but that does not, thankfully, mask an empty head.

A Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay

X&Y - Coldplay

As they proved on their stellar, remarkably focused sophomore effort, {|A Rush of Blood to the Head|}, Coldplay weren't about to be spoiled by success. But in the time since that disc's release, the band -- or, more to the point, major-domo Chris Martin -- have had to deal with a potentially more dangerous problem: a little thing called happiness. While most of the quartet's previous output has dealt with isolation, rejection, and unattainable love, X&Y was crafted in, for lack of a better term, the Gwyneth and Apple Years -- a fact that colors many of the disc's tunes. "The Hardest Part," one of the band's typically elegiac swoonfests, finds Martin marveling at the wonders of pregnancy(!) but managing to stop himself before sinking too deeply into Jim Brickman quicksand. Lovestruck giddiness likewise rears up in the sparse bonus track "Til Kingdom Come," a gentle, folk-tinged catalog of his spouse's attributes. X&Y isn't lyrically one-dimensional, thankfully, and musically, it's far more open-ended than Coldplay's previous full-lengths. "Square One," for instance, replaces the traditional slow build with a lurching gait propelled by Will Champion's tense post-punk drumming. Similarly, "Low," obviously inspired by the {|Bowie|} {|album of the same name|}, slinks along with a decadent and previously unaired lustiness. Most enjoyable of all -- in part because it shows a nascent sense of humor -- is "Talk," a winking appropriation of {|Kraftwerk|}'s "Computer Love" that, in the hands of Martin and company, becomes a sort of cyborg power ballad. Much like {|U2|} -- a band that's constantly held up as a benchmark for these boys -- at a similar point in their career, Coldplay exude both power and self-importance. And much like {|Bono|} and crew, it's looking like Coldplay have the goods to back up the latter for a long time to come.

X&Y - Coldplay

Like {|311|}, Los Angeles quintet Linkin Park use two vocalists to capture alternate ends of the sonic spectrum. Chester Bennington provides angst and vulnerability with his alt-rock roar, while Mike Shinoda offers rancor and rhythm through a percussive hip-hop delivery. But that's where any comparisons to 311 end. Linkin Park are much darker and more aggressive, peppering their songs with lurching rhythms, dissonant samples, and brash, down-tuned guitars. The band's debut, Hybrid Theory, is impressively cutting-edge, fusing the industrial assault of {|Stabbing Westward|} with the insurrectionary charge of {|Rage Against the Machine|}. As confrontational as songs such as "Papercut," "Points of Authority," and "By Myself" are, they're infused with enough melody to keep Linkin Park away from the blindly raging terrain of acts such as {|Slipknot|} and {|Mudvayne|}. And when the Park get kinda sensitive, as on "In the End," which blends delicate piano and soulful vocals with staccato raps and surging rhythms, they reach an entirely new level of hybrid.

Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park

The second album of Ozzy Osbourne's solo career, Diary of a Madman was his last to feature the talents of guitarist Randy Rhodes, who died in a plane crash soon after the disc's release. While it's not as furious as Osbourne's first solo album, Blizzard of Ozz, it still captures Ozzy's maniacal glory. Highlights include "Over the Mountain" and the kinetic "Flying High Again," which benefit as much from Rhodes's blistering musicianship as from Ozzy's heavy, melodic songwriting. Some of the disc is burdened with overly sappy passages and obligatory ballads, but overall, Diary of a Madman is required listening for the well-heeled metalhead. The 2002 remastered reissue includes the bonus B-side, "Flying High Again" single, a live version of "I Don't Know." Following a spat between band members, the parts played originally by bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake have been recorded over.I>--Jon Wiederhorn

Diary of a Madman
